電影講述的是英國一個真實的案例：當年愛爾蘭共和軍反抗英國，到處炸毀公共汽車，制造恐怖氣氛。警方迫于社會壓力急于破案而徇私枉法，一愛爾蘭青年和他的家族成了刑訊逼供的犧牲品。在監獄中，青年與愛爾蘭共和軍成員以暴力對抗獄警，而他的父親整日寫信上訴，走的是一條和平對抗的道路。父子居于一室，在長期的監獄生活中，兒子逐漸理解了父親。父親終因舊病復發去世，而兒子秉承父親遺志，繼續上訴。最后在10 多年后，他的女律師偶爾在檔案中發現了警方舞弊的證據，但最終獲得的卻是女王的特赦，罪魁禍首卻不受懲處，他繼續為伸張正義而努力……

影片以愛爾蘭共和軍和英國當年的暴力對抗為背景，描寫戰爭背景下平民的悲哀、無助與掙扎，中間又穿插著父子二人由對立到相互理解的過程，表現人類最本質的親情之愛。是一部難得的佳作。

當父親去世時，監獄黑黝黝的墻壁上落下燃燒的紙片，在U2 沉重的鼓聲與愛爾蘭風琴憂傷音樂交織的背景下，Sinead 內斂而蘊涵著洶涌情感的歌聲響起。此時，觀者已完全化入電影的意境之中。
