Latin star Thalía does have a bit more going for her than most Latin popsters; there's less of an identikit sound to her voice, and at times she's been better served by producers and arrangers (as on the relatively early "Piel Morena" from the mid-'90s, with its Emilio Estefan sheen). However, pop music is pop music, and these selections, culled from her EMI catalog, show someone moving progressively toward crossover, best exemplified by "Me Pones Sexy," her collaboration with Fat Joe. She shines best on tracks like "Tú y Yo," where a rootsier Mexican influence helps the cut stand out from all the cookie cutters. That she can sing is beyond doubt, but for the most part these greatest hits make her seem like a producer's puppet. Big they may have been, but for the most part there seems to be too little of Thalía herself in them.
