Clinton的音樂生涯開始于納什維爾，在那里他在寫歌的同時還獲得了大學音樂和話劇的雙學位。畢業后他來到了洛杉磯組建了當時很受歡迎的樂隊 George Clinton Band，但不久后就解散了，Clinton作為一位歌曲作者簽約到了華納公司。他成功的為Michael Jackson, Joe Cocker, Diana Ross, Johnny Mathis, The Four Tops, Donny Hathaway, Smokey Robinson, The Jackson Five，Bobby Darin等眾多著名藝人譜寫歌曲，同時他還學習表演，并與Maria Muldaur, Shawn Colvin,Tom Chapin合作表演了百老匯劇目《Pump Boys and Dinettes》。

Clinton最早的原聲作品是為Cheech和Chong制作的電影《Still Smokin'》譜寫的配樂，但他真正進入公眾的視野是因為1992年與Zalman King合作為《The Red Shoe Diaries》譜寫的配樂，也就是從那時起Clinton為大量成功的電影譜寫了配樂，比如：《Mortal Kombat》,《Mortal Kombat: Annihilation》, 《Beverly Hills Ninja》, 《Wild Things》, 《3,00 Miles to Graceland》,《The Santa Clause 2》 ,而喜劇系列三步曲《Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery》, 《Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me》和《Austin Powers in Goldmember》注定要記入他的音樂生涯中。除了電影配樂音樂作品，Clinton還受其家鄉附近的劇院Cumberland County Playhouse所托，為其譜寫了《Smoky Mountain Suite》 ，《Spirit of the Mountain》。Clinton與他的妻子Charlotte和女兒Jessica現居住在加洲。
