影片講述的是一匹野性不羈的野種小公馬，在無拘無束地穿越美國邊境地區時的冒險經歷。第一次遇見人的小馬斯比瑞特(Spirit)即使與年輕、勇敢的土著人(Lakota)利特爾-克里克(Little Creek)成了好朋友時，也不愿被征服。這匹無畏、年輕的小馬在成為舊時西部最杰出、未被贊頌過的英雄之一的過程中，還與一匹漂亮的母馬雷恩(Rain)墜入了愛河。
　　奧斯卡獲獎演員馬特-戴蒙(Matt Damon，以《心靈捕手》“Good Will Hunting”一片獲奧斯卡最佳劇本獎)在片中以第一人稱的口吻敘述了人物故事。曾獲奧斯卡獎提名的語言天才詹姆斯-克倫威爾(James Cromwell，曾出演《小豬寶貝》“Babe”)在《小馬精靈》中為騎兵團上校配音，他決定馴服這匹烈馬，而美國本土演員丹尼爾-斯塔蒂(Daniel Studi)，在片中則為利特爾-克里克配音。
　　夢工廠(DreamWorks)這部最新的動畫片表明了目前被視為傳統卡通片的電影還是需要傳統的攝制技術。計算機出現在動畫片領域使攝制流派發生了革命性的變化，特別是產生了那些全部由計算機制作的著名動畫片，如去年的奧斯卡獲獎影片《怪物施萊克》(“Shrek”)。然而，計算機對2D----即所謂的傳統技術----動畫片的制作影響越來越大，計算機技術被證明對于提高整體動畫質量有著令人驚訝的效果。《小馬精靈》中那優美的畫面是夢工廠迄今為止各類動畫片中制作技術最為復雜的。
