　在當代的美國紐約的曼哈頓街區里隱居著一位魔法巫師巴爾薩澤•布萊克（尼古拉斯•凱奇飾），他和女巫維羅妮卡（莫妮卡•貝魯奇飾）一直與自己的宿敵馬克西姆•霍瓦斯（阿爾弗雷德•莫里納飾）在紐約的街頭巷尾里對抗著。許多年來一直未分勝負，但是由于馬克西姆憑借黑暗力量日益強大，巴爾薩澤深感自己不再是他的對手，因此他決定要訓練學徒來繼承自己的衣缽，可被他寄予厚望的新徒弟戴夫•斯特特勒（杰伊•巴魯切爾飾）怎么看都不是這塊料，他整天想著的不是魔法，而是心儀的女生貝蒂（泰莉莎•帕爾墨飾）。于是，為了將他訓練成可以與黑暗勢力對抗的魔法巫師，巴爾薩澤開始了一系列可以調動戴夫生存勇氣的訓練計劃……
