irginia-born Shilough Hopwood (singer, guitarist, and songwriter) has been creating music under the name Honeychurch since the 90’s: attempting to fuse the elemental sadness of slow core, the melancholy yearning of traditional country music, the sweet harmony singing of West Coast folk-rock, and the lush arrangements of chamber pop. Larissa, a folk musician with roots in the Boston/Amherst areas of Massachusetts, began playing music with Shilough in the 1999 (the year they were married). She switched from acoustic guitar to electric bass, and sings both lead and harmony vocals. Honeychurch has released two critically acclaimed albums: Calling Me Home (2001) and Makes Me Feel Better (2004).  Honeychurch return at last with the wonderfully warm, autumnal Will You Be There with Me; 11 languorous folk-pop nuggets slathered in pedal steel, lush harmonies and stately woodwinds. This is absolute gorgeous, quiet alt-country in the vein of Mojave 3 (or Neil Halstead‘s more recent solo work), Gram Parsons or perhaps even the quieter moments on Wilco‘s Being There but with an ethereal, lighter than air feel that’s not too far removed from ’70s soft rock or even more experimental stuff like later Talk Talk.
